WHY JOIN CAIR-Texas?

Opportunities are available throughout the year for all students to apply—full-time or part-time, undergraduate or graduate, all majors, and even high school students. Interns can earn academic credit or community service hours, or simply enrich their experience and insight to advocacy and civil rights efforts.

A complete application consists of the following documents submitted by email:

1. Application Form, signed and dated with all spaces filled with the most updated information and truthful responses, and submitted through email only;

2. Cover Letter that specifies the position you’re applying and session (i.e., Winter-Spring, Summer, or Fall) you’re applying for, as well as your interests and qualifications;

3. Resumé that lists your most relevant and updated profile and contact information; and

4. Samples When Applicable (Department/Division administrators may require to submit at least one of the following samples)

  • Writing Sample, [Civil Rights] a drafted legal document or essay that reflects civil rights and advocacy as it pertains to CAIR-Texas’s scope (max. 15 pages). [All other departments] an original work (2-3 pages) not submitted for academic course work that reflects CAIR-Texas's scope as it pertains to the applied position; OR

5.  Portfolio When Applicable, [Communications or Operations] a display of completed works displaying skills, interests and perspective that also reflects CAIR-Texas's scope as it pertains to the applied position.

TIMELINE & MINIMUM EXPECTATIONS

The internship and externship opportunities are available all year long. Apply anytime in the year!

Applicants should be contacted within five (5) business days of sending their complete applications. If an applicant is identified as a viable candidate for the program, an interview is scheduled. Candidates may be asked for additional documents to compliment their applications prior to their interview.

CAIR-Texas Austin/DFW chapter should notify the candidate of its decision within two (2) business weeks of the interview. Candidates must respond whether they accept or reject to join the program within one (1) business week.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENT

Undergraduate/Graduate: Individuals who have attained at least a high school diploma or G.E.D. will be required to complete at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 12 hours per week.

High School: Students in grades 9-12 will be required to complete at least eight (8) weeks with a minimum of 10 hours per week.

ORIENTATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENT

It is required for each intern and extern to attend the mandatory orientation sessions. Failure to fulfill this requirement will void the internship opportunity.

COMPLETION

Upon completing the minimum required number of weeks and hours, the intern must complete an exit interview with their supervisors for a final evaluation of their performance. They will also be given the opportunity to share their experience and their feedback. Interns who completed their internships and externships with high regards may be invited to return for future sessions, given their availability and the organization’s needs.

Available Internships with CAIR-Texas Austin & DFW

Interns work closely with the Executive Director and Outreach & Development Coordinator in creating content and executing media strategies for CAIR-Austin/DFW.

 1. Journalism

  • Writing original articles covering local, national, and international breaking news, protests, and issues that are relevant to human rights, civil liberties, social justice and activism, Islamophobia, the Middle East, domestic politics, hyper-policing and surveillance, religion, and other relevant issues.

2. Social Media Marketing + Growth

  • Creating and implementing a social media strategy for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat

  • Creating and managing websites for various organizational projects (e.g., anti-hate campaigns, educational initiatives, blogs, etc.)

  • Developing long-term research projects assisting with the development of qualitative and quantitative reports and analyses of the mainstream news media coverage and popular culture representations of Islam and Muslims

3. Videography + Photography

  • Creating and editing regular video stories and photography projects for website, media, and social media

  • Documenting CAIR-Austin/DFW's activities, events, and relevant organizational processes through photography and videography

4. Graphic Design

  • Designing flyers and other relevant graphics for newsletters, articles, memes, social media, and website use.

Qualifications: 

  • Photography, videography, and/or graphic design experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Understanding of the principles of journalism and research

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and under strict time constraints

  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented

  • Experience with web design and relevant skills (Wordpress, HTML, CSS, etc.) is strongly preferred

  • Experience with graphic design and relevant software (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc) is strongly preferred

  • Experience with photography and experience using DSLR cameras and relevant software (Photoshop, etc) is strongly preferred

  • Experience with audio and video production and relevant software (Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Adobe Premiere, etc.) is strongly preferred
